Out of this World

I would like to comment on our visit and overnight trip to Paul and Debbie Tricketts beautiful turn of the century 2 storey home in what seems like their very own private sheltered cove named Little Harbor in Rencontre East on the South coast of NL. To start, the Tricketts are two of the most easy going and friendly people I have ever met and have had the pleasure of spending time with. The trip started with a 1 1/2 hr coastal boat trip across Fortune bay where we boarded in a quaint little town called Bay Largent. I was a little apprehensive of the boat trip as I had a little fishing trawler in mind that would be our ride over to rencontre east. I was surprised to see a 100 ft passenger boat sitting at the dock. The ride was comfortable and we enjoyed beautiful scenery leaving Bay Largent as well as entering Rencontre. Once we walked off the boat we stepped back in time!! There are no cars here and transportation consists of a few 4 wheel bikes that run around the little narrow paths that are running in and around the little town. At the end of the gov wharf the first thing you will notice is their tiny firehall, little convenience store that carries a bit of everything and I guess you would call this the hub of the town. To get to the house in the little harbor is a short 5 minute walk up over the hill and down again to something that is hard to put into words. You are literally stepping back in time to the early 1900s. The house and the little stages are set in the most beautiful little cove you will ever see. The house is actually built right on the wharf!! To say that this is a waterfront property would be a huge understatement!!! Walk out the front door and sit down, throw a line out in the water and listen and watch the waterfalls of the salmon river 200' beside you!! The interior of the house is a story book in itself. There are stories and history throughout this beautiful old home. Although it does have a modern kitchen with all the modern amenities and a beautiful little dining room which were both added on in recent years, the main house has changed little. when you sit down to enjoy your meal you are actually on top of the water rolling under you. Now that's an ocean view! lol I was blown away when we were giving a tour of the old house and seen there are more full baths than there are bedrooms!!! Each bedroom has its own private bathroom!! I was expecting an outhouse!! Amazing!! This is a tri

The Chart House

Spent just under a week at the chart house and it is an absolutely incredible place. The house had everything we could possibly want, the view is unmatched, and the community is amazing. Couldn't have asked for a better place to stay!

A LITTLE BIT OF HEAVEN!!!

We spent an absolutely wonderful week at this amazing place… a true taste of Newfoundland that has been basically untouched. The house is amazing, fully equipped with everything you could possibly want, very comfortable, and with a view that is just out of this world! Paul and Debbie were perfect hosts and they, as well as the locals in Rencontre East, went out of their way to make us welcome. We lived off the sea for the entire week. The scenery in the area is breathtaking . It was a truly remarkable holiday! Thank you Paul and Debbie for sharing your little bit of heaven!!!

Something for everyone and much, much more.

Satisfying the needs of two mid thirties outdoor enthusiasts, two children under two years old, and two retired grandparents from Europe is no easy task. But Paul, Deb, Brain and the lovely people of Rencontre East did just that and so much more. Everything from little day trips in an open boat to secluded sandy beaches with the kids, to the lovely walks through this friendly outport town, to the moonlight evenings on the deck, to the warm evenings in the coziest house you can imagine, to the sightseeing tours of inland fiords, to some of the most challenging hiking over some of the most breathtaking landscapes anywhere; exceeded our expectations. This is a great getaway to relax and unwind. Hear the tide come and go under the house while relaxing in front of the fire reading a book. The coastline is amazing, take a trip with Brian along the coast, it is well worth it. The hiking is unreal but not for the faint of heart. You'll need to be in shape and have map and compass skills. Rencontre Lake is amazing. Walk in and take a boat tour. Make sure you buy some local supplies like milk and eggs at the two stores in town. It is a great way to meed and support the local community. With that said the selection is limited and we like to cook and eat well so we brought all our of own food and liquor. The logistics of getting to the ferry and getting from the ferry to the house are a breeze. Whatever you bring, they can handle it. I can't say enough about how wonderful we found this place and its people.

A step back in time

Beautiful private harbor, a nearby waterfall, view of the bay, trees and birds, utter peace. The host was very helpful in getting our luggage to the site, which is not easy, as there are no real roads, just ATV tracks. Anyone with mobility issues would have difficulty. There are several lovely walks around the area. High mountains and beautiful scenery. The ferry ride was fun as well and very cheap. A wonderful holiday just to get away from it all. We bought a cd player for fun, cards and good book. There is a liquor store in area but recommend bring own liquor and food.

Owner response: Yes! it is a real step back in time a place for sure to rewind. ATV'S, are the only way in getting around and Guest are encouraged to use the ATV Taxi's if need be. Also more board walks & steps would be nice to work on for the future Guest that may have mobility issues. We always encourage to bring your Favorites no matter what it is a happy Guest a happy Host. Thanks so much Gloria Paul

A delightful stay!

We heard about Rencontre East and Paul's lovely rental from a friend .We planned this three day trip over the winter and we were totally delighted with the house , the views and the people we met .Paul arranged for pick up of our gear at the ferry and we had a short walk over to the house .-A beautifully restored older home with a deck/stage head , that looked out to sea .Lovely . Really no words for it! We cooked up several great meals in the well equipped kitchen ! -Bring your own grub as the two small stores carry only basics .There is a liquor store ,the selection of spirits is fine but bring your own wine, if so inclined .The outport has a small take out ,good service with fresh fish on the menu. A trip up Rencontre Lake is not to be missed .An adventure in itself! Thank you Terri, Brian, Natalie &Paul for a great stay .

We enjoyed a wonderful week in this Newfoundland outport. If you enjoy being disconnected this is a great place to visit. The house is as pictured and the property owner is delightful and most accommodating. Bring lots of reading material, your camera and some of your favourite recipes. We plan to go back.

A hidden Gem of tranquility

Myself, wife and son were invited to go to Rencontre East on a site seeing adventure while visiting Newfoundland. Not knowing what to expect going to a place with no cars or public transportation, we decided to throw caution to the wind, and hopped onto the ferry in Bay L'Argent for an hour 45 min boat ride. Arriving in Rencontre East was breathtaking and mysterical. Paul met us with his limo and trailer (4 wheeler) and we followed him on foot to his paradise lodging. I have traveled across Canada, the USA, Middle East, Europe and the Great North, and none had any more spectacular serenity than this hidden secret Newfoundland. Will be back again for sure. Thanks Jim & Brenda for including us and to Paul for his outstanding hospitality and giving us a guided tour of the area, both on land and sea.

little Harbour brook

A beautiful fully renovated 3 bedroom house, located on a wharf right over the water! Only home on the beautiful cove surrounded by mountains, with a salmon brook running into the cove. Watched the lobstermen unload their catch every morning. The little village of about 300 people, has two stores, one with a liquor store section. It has all the basics you would need. Must say that our host Paul was most helpful, he helped transfer our luggage to and from the ferry dock. He also is very knowledge about the area and its history. Would certainly come again for an even longer stay.( we had 4 days this time.) Certainly a 5 star rating!

Stunning scenery and a great experience ! I've always wanted to visit one of the isolated communities in the south coast and booked a house with Paul Trikett ( South Coast Vacation Homes)in Roncontre East. I thought it would be a great experience for our family and we were blown away! We enjoyed our 1 hour and 15 minute cruise taking in the beautiful waterfalls and cliffs from the ocean. When the community of Roncontre East appeared you could tell it was an interesting place. We were greeted by Paul and Debby who met us at the warf and explained a bit about the area then walked with us to our home for the weekend. I was blown away by the location of the house which seemed to have the whole cove to itself. The house is situated on its own warf and you can hear the waves gently passing underneath . To the left of the house a very nice enters the ocean and the sound of the running water are incredible. Sitting on the warf taking it all in with a glass of wine in hand was a very relaxing experience that we won't soon forget . A short 10 minute hike behind the house up a hill leads to a stunning panoramic view that rivals Gros Morne National Park. This view takes in the surrounding mountains and the beautiful river with the lake in the distance . We booked a trip up the lake the next day with our hosts and had an awesome couple of hours . We saw beautiful towering mountain views with lots of waterfalls , visited an old mine, and learned about the area. We stopped for a lunch and drinks at Pauls remote cabin on the lake and had a swim in the clear waster . This place truly felt you were completely isolated and surrounded by unsoiled nature. We expected the scenery to be beautiful and it far exceeded what we could have ever imagined ; truly views straight out of a tourism add. The house itself was very comfortable and had all the amenities of home. Although it may be tempting to turn on netflixks at the end of the day and watch a movie to unwind, consider putting on one of the old Newfoundland records on the old record player and get lost on the history of the old house and a simpler time. Read some of the local books in the house to shed some light on the history of the area while you kick back on your own warf. Explore this isolated community that was no roads or cars and see how some people live. Talk to some of the local folks, walk around the boardwalk , check out some of the history in the community. A unique destination to remember; try it.

Three couples from Conception Bay South enjoyed a totally awesome weekend at the Chart House. We took our own boats across the arm from St Bernard's and were totally enthralled with the rugged coastline, coves and cliffs. When we entered the little harbour and saw our salt box home on stilts, we were in love! The deck and wharf, the river flowing over the rocks, the fishing stages, all welcomed us. The quaint house accommodated all of our needs, and the walk around town was like going back in time. The boardwalk, the cod fishing and Deb and Paul's delicious fish stew made right on the boat were memories that we won't soon forget. Rencontre East might be isolated but we didn't feel like we were. Everyone makes you feel welcome and it's a wonderful getaway from the hustle and bustle of our busy lives. We're already planning another trip for next year. This is a beautiful, unspoiled part of Nl and we hope it always stays that way.

This was our 23rd annual "Women's Weekend Getaway" and we really enjoyed our time at this house. Paul and Debbie really made us feel welcome that's for sure! We also booked the lake tour "up the pond" with Paul, Brian and we can't forget Little Bear - that was a great trip with a lovely lunch, thanks again Debbie and Allie!! The power outage the day we were leaving wasn't great but we cooked our breakfast on the BBQ and it all tasted wonderful! A wonderful few days away from it all!!

Beautiful older home full of history and historical artifacts, from a record player with records to wonderful books that bring you back to what Newfoundland was like in the pre-confederation. The house is dated but has all of the necessary comforts required for an extended stay. The view and location are award winning and far outweigh any shortcomings the house could possibly have, which are few and far between. We travelled with our 13 and 17 year old children and have memories from our stay in Rencontre East that will be forged in their memories forever. We strongly recommend that you have Paul take you on his excursions that include a trip "up the pond" and an afternoon out on the Bay. Paul is very passionate about the history of the area and it's raw natural beauty. We will definitely be coming back.

Absolutely amazing trip that we will be talking about for a long time. Paul went out of his way to make sure that we had everything we needed. Those who went cod fishing had a lot of fun and the trip to Ackley city and everything that that included was incredible. The Chart house was splendid, the beds were very comfy, kitchen had had everything you could need to prepare meals. Can't wait to return.

Stayed for a week in late September and could not have had a better time. We came over from Poole's cove in our boat, and after a 45 minute ride we were sitting on the dock with the boat moored ten feet from us looking out at the mouth of a gorgeous salmon river on one side, and Fortune Bay on the other. Hiked the numerous trails just adjacent to the house up to the lookout where you can see the river wind through the gorge and between two large hills, picking blueberries the whole way. If you are looking for a quiet peaceful getaway and to spend some time outdoors, this is DEFINITELY the place to go. Thanks, Paul!

Property is clean and well looked after. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was easy to use for our group of 6. There was no snack bar open when we arrived but we were able to get some local fish and with the onions and potatoes we bought in the store we had a great feed. Paul is a great host and looked after all our needs. His tour up Racontre Pond was the highlight of the visit and is highly recommended. This is a very scenic area and it's remoteness is very evident once you come a shore and the ferry leaves. It is well worth a visit.

This place was totally awesome. It was an "experience" vacation...that you can in no way appreciate until you've done it! First, let me tell you about Ackley House...absolutely gorgeous, the pictures don't do it justice! So beautifully furnished, the large deck overlooking the bay, everything so updated, so roomy, and a bed so inviting and comfortable, that I could have stayed there half the day, if not so much more to do. The house was more than well equipped with everything we needed and spotlessly clean! Now let me tell you about your hosts...Paul & Debbie. They can't do enough to make your stay perfect for you. So easy going but there in a minute notice to see to any of your needs. Both are so knowledgeable about the area. They'll share all they know with you, find out your interests and help you discover just what you need. All with a big smile and a pat on the back. Perfect involved hosts but very non-intrusive. Our privacy was respected! Now I'll try to describe why it's an experience... I live in the city, I've visited resettled communities that are dead. Recontre East is unique in that they denied resettlement and kept their community just as it was! No cars! The atmosphere that surrounds you is of peace, a simple life & wonderful people. That in and of itself will make your experience so valuable. But to add more, take the town tour, you'll visit structures and places of so long ago. You'll feel like you stepped back in time. Paul & Debbie will provide a personal touch, so that when this tour is over, you can really put yourself back in time. We did the Pond Tour, we went up this fjord in boat, the scenery around us was breathtaking. I never experienced anything like that before! At the top of "the pond" we docked at a beautiful beach and had refreshments at Paul & Debbie's cabin. We headed back through the same gorgeous scenery, our hosts had a couple surprises for us that had us cracking up laughing! They laughed with us lol! Finish it off with a night of stargazing! We're definitely going back, next time my sons and their girlfriends will be joining us! We've always well traveled them, but they have never experienced anything like this! Everyone should, you will return home feeling totally revitalized! Some would describe having a better appreciation of what they have, I would describe it as a true appreciation of what you don't have that can only be found in your experience at Recontre East!

Heard about this beautiful community and Paul's vacation homes from a friend, who suggested it as a "relaxing get-away", and was it ever!! Amazing!! Paul and Deb met us at the ferry and told us stories of the community as we made our way to Ackley House. The house was bright, spacious and spotless. Very comfortable for our group of 6, could easily accommodate an additional 2 and still be comfortable, for both sleeping arrangements and meal time. Basics provided in the kitchen, everything just like home for cooking. Beds were crisp, clean and cozy... fabulous night sleep. Slept with the window open and loved listening to the rain and thunder as we were going to bed! Nothing could beat drinking a hot cup of coffee on the deck in the morning... the view overlooking the water is amazing. The house sits above the community and is at the end of a little road, so nobody walking by... pretty private spot. Lovely to walk around the community, and even picked blueberries and little raspberries for our dessert that evening (yum!). Having a trip "up the pond" is a MUST. Hear stories of the land, see the mine and beautiful waterfalls... rivals Gros Morne with the beautiful mountains and picturesque scenery as you travel by boat to visit their little cabin for a tasty lunch before heading back again. Take your camera!! No better way to escape the noise of everyday hustle and bustle. Paul and Deb make sure you have everything you need, could not ask for better hosts. Excited to book again, will absolutely return!!
